The first few months of the year is the time when the gyms are fully packed. Most of us are trying to keep up with the new resolutions we have made about keeping fit.
I am sure you will not be surprised to spot a lady wearing makeup to the gym or you may even be that person that wears makeup to the gym. Perhaps you rushed to your yoga session immediately after work with your face still made up, or maybe you are just that person that feels more confident looking good while working out. The question about whether or not we should be wearing makeup to the gym seems like a no-brainer, but why do we still see gyms full of women wearing full faces of carefully applied cosmetics?
The goal may be to look good while working out or to cover up imperfections if you have blemish-prone skin. However, here is the truth about what wearing makeup to the gym is doing to your skin. According to Dr. Ava Shamban, Clinical professor of Dermatology at UCLA and author of ‘Heal your Skin’ “Wearing makeup to the gym is just about the worst thing you can do to your complexion,” “The makeup combined with oil and perspiration creates a pore-plugging sludge that can result in blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, ashyness and allergies.” Increased temperature brought on by exercise and sweat can lead to open pores which can become easily blocked by particles of makeup.
The sweating isn’t the only problem. Remember that while at the gym you are in constant contact with the floor, weights, yoga mats and exercise bicycles all of which are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. We also tend to touch our face on average 4 times an hour( a little more when we are sweating). If you are wearing makeup to the gym, the constant touching of the face with bacteria filled hands gives this bacteria something to cling on to much longer. This is the perfect recipe for an acne breakout.
What about a little mascara?
Eye makeup such as eye-shadows and mascara ,even if its waterproof, is still a bad idea. This is because it can still run and enter your eyes which can end up irritating the eyes. Besides nobody looks cute with running mascara anyway! (Unless of course you are Beyoncé)
On the eyelids, any unwashed and leftover eye shadows can actually create little cysts called milia.
What about tinted moisturizers?
Lots of makeup artist recommend that if you must wear makeup to the gym, then you should use a light oil-free tinted moisturizer. Lighter makeup formulas are no better, as this means they will slide right off once you break a sweat.
We have established that makeup to the gym should be a NO-NO! It is just not worth it. If you don’t have the time to cleanse your face before hitting the gym then some makeup wipes or miceller water will do the trick. If you are worried about looking cute at the gym, how about investing in some flattering gym outfits? They make you feel super fabulous.
You can also opt for a little grooming by brushing your brows into place with a spoolie and applying some lip-balm or gloss.
Please note that it is equally important to thoroughly cleanse your face after a great workout to get rid of any dirt build-up.
Moisturizing before a workout is not necessary because you will just sweat the product of. However, if you have extremely dry skin, consider applying a light serum instead.
