When it comes to makeup, Rihanna is untouchable! So when Vogue magazine recently blessed us by dropping a makeup tutorial on their YouTube channel featuring the one and only ‘bad girl’ Riri, I knew it was going to be filled with lots of helpful makeup tips as well as lots of laughter. As a companion to her recent Vogue June cover, the singer recorded a video of her 10 minute makeup routine. In this tutorial, Miss Fenty beauty walked us through how she does her makeup. She also shared a few beauty and makeup tips she has picked up over the years. Here’s what we learned:
Contour is a must!
When you do contour, do so according to your face shape With each face shape comes different features, such as prominent cheek bones or a pointier chin for heart shaped faces. Contouring on a round face shape for example would be a lot more different than doing the same on an oval face. The same would apply to contouring a longer nose vs. a shorter nose. It is therefore important to keep not only your face shape but your features in mind when contouring.
Cover up your hairline!
Rihanna reminds us to cover up the white line that often appears right next to your hairline. This happens when you don’t apply your makeup all the way around your forehead or when you don’t blend your makeup well into your hairline. If you have natural hair and are into laying your edges, do so BEFORE applying your makeup. Styling your edges after would remove makeup around your hair line. Leaving you with the ‘white line’ we (and Rihanna) do not appreciate.
Slim neck hack!
For a slimmer neck, contour it by drawing a triangle under your chin (where the base of your chin meets your neck) and fill it in then blend it out. Rihanna explained this will give the illusion of a longer, slimmer neck.
Concealer is made for covering up hangovers and bad decisions!
Rihanna reminded us exactly what concealer is for. Color correctors can also be used for covering up dark circles, redness and any other blemishes you wish to cover up. Be sure to get the right color corrector for the issue you wish to address e.g.: Deep brown/orange covers up dark spots, Yellow brightens up dark areas and Green reduces redness (mostly suitable on fair skin).
For a natural makeup look, use bronzer on your eyes!
If you are going for a soft natural daytime look, Rihanna suggests using your bronzer as an eye shadow. Bronzers are usually only a few shades darker than your skin tone. They also tend to be shimmery which makes them perfect for your eyes as well.
Cover up dark under eyes with eye shadow!
It’s quite common to dust along your lash line with the same eye shadow used on your eyes. However if you are still struggling with dark under eyes, or just puffy eyes from a lack of sleep, dust over a larger area to cover that up. Being that this look is intended for daytime, it is best to go with an eye shadow color that isn’t too harsh. A soft to medium brown color will work perfectly.
Layer up your highlighter!
Rihanna reminds us that she is obsessed with highlighter, and often layers different shades. Layering your highlighter would give you a variety of unique shades each time. She cautions that you should only layer on highlighters that blend well together for a seamless look. To be sure, try mixing them up on your hand first to see how well they blend together.
Add some “zest”!
You can add a little bit more glam to your otherwise subtle daytime look by dabbing a little bit of shimmery eye shadow to the inner corners of your eyes. This creates a ‘wide awake’ look as well as helps to draw attention to your eyes.
