If I had to pick one beauty item that should be a must have for every woman it would most definitely be red lipstick. Red is not a color you wear when you are feeling shy or demure. It’s a color of confidence, power and sex appeal.
Gwyneth Paltrow once said “Beauty to me is about being comfortable in your own skin, that or a kick-ass red lipstick.”
Quick History Lesson
Famous suffragettes such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman wore red lipstick as a form of emancipation. Thereafter, women started wearing a bright shade of rouge on their lips at rallies. This was a way for women to rebel because some male authority figures, social and religious groups found this to be distasteful back then. From Marilyn Monroe, Scarlet Johansson to Rihanna and Rita Ora, the power of a slick rouge across the lips is well known. It is one of the secret weapons for these sexy women. So what exactly is it that makes a woman feel ultra-confident and empowered simply by applying lipstick?
A lot of intrigued Psychologists have researched this question to find appropriate answers. Professor Marita McCabe, a professor at Deakin University says it’s as simple as this “If you feel good about yourself physically and psychologically, putting on red lipstick is saying ‘I am here’, and it separates you from other women. When you wear it, you know people will look twice at you – Particularly men.”
In another study done at Edith Cowan University, out of 300 female lipstick users, 85% reported that they felt “Very confident” when wearing lipstick. Another 82% said lipstick made them feel “Really good about themselves”
From the research above, it is clear that red lipstick can help us exude confidence and power. Most women that tend to stay away from lipstick and specifically red lipstick do so in fear that the color will not look flattering on them. Red lipstick can be flattering to just about anyone irrespective of your skin color. It is also particularly flattering on women of color as well.

How to Wear Red Lipstick
- Keep your eye makeup minimal when wearing a red lip to avoid looking overly made up. Red lips look best when the rest of the makeup is clean.
- Use a lip liner to tone down a super bright red so that it can complement your skin tone.
- If the lipstick is too bold, try a sheer version first to help you build up the confidence of rocking a bold red lip.
- Exfoliate and prime your lips first. Lipstick doesn’t work well on dry chapped lips, it needs a good surface to adhere to.
The simple act of applying red lipstick is empowering! So wear it with confidence ladies.
“Lipstick has the power to give women confidence and hope all over the world. It’s what I call the psychology of makeup: When you look good you feel good, and when you are at you’re most confident, you can unlock your power on the world around you.”-Charlotte Tilbury
