I got to meet the brains behind Instagram Foodie page ‘My Nutty Delights’ and in a few short words, it was a delight to say the least. Her page is synonymous for incorporating plant-based ingredients, more specifically nuts, and creating what we the viewers can only term as Art.
For all those who don’t know you, tell us a little bit about the brains behind My Nutty Delights?
Okay, I am Cheptoo Chirchir, just turned 22 and studying Economics and Management at the University of Leeds. I am also into fitness and photography.
What inspired you to start ‘My Nutty Delights’?
When I got here (the UK), I gained so much weight cause of all the fast foods, so I started eating healthy and I would post my pictures on Snapchat, but then with Snapchat of course they’d expire in 24 hours, and then I’d have people asking me all these questions. Also with Snapchat I’d have to save the pictures on my phone and they were just for me at the end of the day. Eventually I thought of going to Instagram as a better way to share because the pictures of course stay for longer and people can see the content. This was the beginning of My Nutty Delights.
Is it just an Instagram based page or do you have a blog or website?
I don’t have a blog yet. I want to start one but I feel like Instagram is also a lot because I have to keep up. However, I have wanted to start blogging, and that is something I am working on.
Your pictures come out so good, people wonder ‘your pictures can’t come out perfect in one go’, do you experience any blunders?
I have so many! Sometimes I take pictures which I don’t even upload because they just don’t look good especially if you have something you really want in mind and it just doesn’t work, or sometimes your food doesn’t taste good either, then I don’t post them. Most of the times it’s trial and error because it’s not like I have a plan of how I am going to place the food or anything, it just comes naturally but it doesn’t always work out.
Do you look up to anyone in particular?
Most of the people I follow actually on Instagram, and that’s why I follow them because they assist me. When I see something they have posted of course I’d want to do something like they’ve done, or gives me ideas of what I could do or stuff like that.
Do you have any advice for anyone aspiring to be a foodie?
I think first of all finding accounts that you look up to because of course they will inspire you a lot. Also, invest in a good camera. It doesn’t have to be expensive or simply do what I do, I use my phone camera. Then always use natural light – I personally think pictures work best when you take them with natural light. Lastly, don’t forget a good editing app as well.
If you could name three things you have to use in your recipes, what would they be, besides nuts?
Peanut butter, cinnamon, and bananas.
The one food you cannot live without, and why?
Oats. I don’t think I can go two or three days without oats. Oats are very filling, and I think if you are into fitness they are a very good breakfast option because it keeps you full for longer so you’re not going to be snacking. Also, they are very healthy and you can literally cook them with anything you want savoury or sweet.
Besides being a foodie you’re also into fitness, are you planning on starting a new Instagram page on fitness?
No, but then I want to incorporate My Nutty Delights and fitness. I am still trying to figure out how to do that because I don’t know if I am going to be posting pictures of myself even though I kind of do it on my Instastory when I go to the gym. I have gone live on Instagram before so then you’d see me working out, but I am still trying to see how I can mix my food and fitness.
What is your favorite recipe from your page?
My spinach smoothie. It has bananas, spinach, kale (more spinach than kale), almond milk, chia seeds and once in a while avocado.
