As Toba Beta said, “People with dimples have a divine role in this universe: smile!” With her classic red lip, Ameena smiles revealing her dimples that further compliment her unique sense of style. This hijabi is what we like to refer to as fashion forward and I’m sure you agree as well.
Who said modest fashion is boring? Ameena rocks modest fashion with flair and elegance and she owns it. She has mastered the fit of her apparel which compliments the fabric designs. She incorporates florals, snake prints, geometry or/and solid colors and ooh la la, she looks good. Once in a while, she’ll even throw on a floppy hat over her hijab giving us that tropical, elegant feel. Her style has influenced quite a large number of ladies. This prompted her to curate and provide fashion pieces for them.
Ameena was and still is inspired by France. The ambiance, the people, the fashion, the sweet affections and elegance…let’s not to fail to mention coffee and croissants. You know what they say about the Frenchman, by nature he is sensuous and sensitive. Ameena saw the vision for a name for her business; that of making custom-made modest apparel that not only is beautiful and unique but empowers women and makes them feel confident.
Why not get the details about Moderne from Ameena herself?
I started a fashion blog called Am.in.a Femshion: Its a female thing! Here I get to document different fashion pieces with ways of how to style them and I also incorporate business tips and lessons I have learnt along my journey. And I would always have people asking me where I got my outfits from. Thing was, majority of them were custom-made; they were styles and prints I liked and felt stylish, confident and beautiful them. In addition, knowing that they were customized felt more personalized and special. So after I graduated, I didn’t have a job yet and therefore used that time to start the business of customizing fashion pieces as a source of income.
But it wasn’t just any fashion pieces, it was Modest fashion pieces. Modest fashion for me boils down to dressing in a manner that is still within the bounds of what my religion describes as the correct dress of a man/woman. If I’m not doing that in any way, then it’s not modest fashion, it is just fashion.
So I started Moderne
Honestly, it was more of a selfish approach because I couldn’t find the kind of clothes that suit my style and I realized there were a lot more people who felt the same way. We wanted something different to wear aside from the everyday abaya and I wanted to fill that gap.
Once I got into it and saw what I was creating, I realized that Moderne is not just for the Somali/Muslim community. Modesty is for everyone, irrespective of your race, ethnicity or religious background. It’s a beautiful thing and being able to cater to that makes it more fulfilling.
I love fashion and I love being my own boss. However, running a business can become a bit of a challenge as there are many aspects that require your full attention. My sister, Khadija Abdulrashid (but we call her Muna), stepped in to help me with a few errands here and there.
I definitely felt the weight lifted and the business flourishing even more. I asked her to stay on and she said yes and now, we are business partners. Muna is great with the administrative aspect of the business and she handles it well. On the other side, I handle the creative aspect of it and social media management. However, we consult with each other when there are big decisions to make. Sticking to our strengths has really helped us operate better.
Having a family member as a business partner is great, especially for us. My sisters and I are best friends. Now that I am working with Muna, it has brought us even closer and made our bond stronger because we are there for one another even when things get tough…and they do get tough. Our parents have done a fantastic job of instilling values such as respect and friendship between us and that has helped us a lot and improved our work ethic.
I love it when our customers tell us that they feel amazing when they wear a piece by Moderne or that people complimented them all day because of how good they looked. It honestly feels so surreal.
