The busiest season in the fashion industry kicked off and it has been nothing short of perfection. Lots of appreciation for the wonderful work brought to life by some of the most talented designers and creatives the industry has to offer. Everyone who works even remotely close to the fashion world is currently in New York City enjoying what they call work and most call fun times. Passion for fashion can be turned into a legit living and fashion week is our Grammy’s meets the Olympics meets the World cup with form-fitting uniform for the Oscars. I know my fashion family feels my vibe. New York Fashion Week 2018, ooh la la!
We can’t all be physically present for New York Fashion Week 2018 but in spirit and through social media, we are there getting inspired.
I chose to seek inspiration from one of the most anticipated aspects of New York fashion week, and that is the street style. Street style lets me know what’s IN this season, what is a classic and will always be a classic. Better yet, how to style certain pieces in my closet that have been collecting dust due to a lack of styling knowledge.
This year street style at New York fashion week 2018 has taught me quite a lot. Here is how it can be of help to all you fierce fashion sisters and brothers out there.
It has been raining in New York but even the rain could not stop the slay that is hot and heavy on the streets of the concrete jungle. One accessory that was quite popular this year. I feel we should each own a piece is the PVC umbrella. All things PVC have been highly appreciated this year and maybe even done to death. However, this trend keeps rising regardless. Some might not gravitate towards the shoes or bags but the umbrella is something we can all agree is Audrey Hepburn “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” fabulous.
It is time to get those over-size leather jackets out of the closet, to the dry cleaners and on to the streets. Back in the 90’s all things over-size were considered fashion forward. Today, over-size jackets in general have made quite the comeback. During New York fashion week 2018, I was particularly stunned at how singer Christina Aguilera styled her red leather jacket. It looks edgy in a way that can’t be ignored.
Invest in as many tiny handbags as you possibly can.
In Nairobi, between September and December, is usually filled with countless events and those tiny handbags come in handy. During New York fashion week, a favorite was the classic tiny Hermes Kelly and the Dior Sadle bag.
You will never go wrong with either a monochrome look or an animal print vibe. A pant suit is already such a powerful boss babe look. Take notes from Bonang Matheba!
All good things come in pairs so get your fashion bestie and kill the fashion game at upcoming events. Prints are fun and anything checked or plaid is currently a vibe.
Boots and dresses, boots and skirts it doesn’t matter. Get the boots and style them to suit your personal style.
Neon has been an end of summer trend and I doubt if it will be coming to an end any time soon. Off and on the runway, this fun color palette can be styled up to create looks for either warm or cold weather.
Pushing the envelope when it comes to fashion, will never run out of style. Some of the most iconic fashion personalities are known for their fierce taste and courage to create a trend of their own. that mostly looks good only on them. So express yourself, treat fashion like art and use your body like the canvas.
Don’t we all wish fashion week was all year-long? The gurus are out and about with a ton of style to display and we are loving it.
