The Afropunk festival just took place in Brooklyn, New York this past weekend and it is safe to say we need it to take place at least once a month twelve times a year. The good news is we can look forward to more futuristic looks in a weeks’ time during London.
The amount of fascinating looks seen during the two day event was overwhelming yet extremely impressive. I love it when folks take full advantage of an opportunity to express themselves through fashion. Afropunk is a time to celebrate black culture. This is done through music and fashion to our natural hair. One can play around with different creative styles, tribal body art and expressive makeup looks. Meanwhile the crowd jams to quality music from all generations that tell the stories of our struggles and our legends. This is truly a time for we as black people to be our creatively authentic self and be obsessed with our roots.
The burst of color and intense accessorizing was impeccable. You could tell time and thought went into coming up with a number of the looks that were served. I especially loved the appreciation of Afros left right and centre and the use of minimal makeup. You could feel the freedom in the air as people exercised their right to be exactly who they are with no limitations or restrictions. This is really what peace and happiness is all about.
Here is a quick look at some of the Afropunk Brooklyn 2018 looks that caught my eye the most.
Does it get any better than this? So much personality went into each and every one of these looks. The style entry is a mood board all on its own. Those present for the festival owned their roots and definitely owned who they were through their choice of fashion. These are the moments I live for in fashion; moments that celebrate the ability to stand out and create a look that works individually for you but still keeps you looking trendy like the masses. Can’t wait to see what London has in store for us!
