Everything You Need To Know About Oil Pulling

This technique may not quite be a household name as yet but is slowly gaining popularity especially among natural health enthusiasts. Oil pulling, also known as “gundusha” is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique. It involves swishing a tablespoon of oil (Preferably coconut, sesame or sunflower oil) in the mouth on an empty stomach for about 20 minutes to improve oral health. This is an age-old remedy for removing bacteria and promoting healthy teeth and gums with the added advantage of whitening teeth naturally.

It works by literally cleaning the dirt and toxins out of your body through the mouth and detoxifying the oral cavity Primarily, it’s done to improve oral health but it also improves your overall health. Although more research is still being done on oil pulling, studies have shown that certain natural oils such as coconut oil can help fight harmful bacteria in the mouth.

The oil traditionally used is organic sesame oil or coconut oil. Gently swish the oil in your mouth pulling it through your teeth for 20 minutes. No need to be aggressive as you would with mouth wash to avoid getting a stiff jaw.

Spit the oil out: Once the 20 minutes are up, spit the oil out into a trash can (not the sink to avoid it from clogging up your drain as the oil can solidify). Do not swallow the oil because by this time it is full of the toxins and bacteria ‘pulled’.

Rinse and brush:

Immediately rinse your mouth with warm water and salt to get any remaining oil out of your mouth. You can then proceed to brush and floss your teeth as you normally would.

Oil pulling is considered safe. The oils used are coconut oil and sesame oil. They are edible and considered to be healthy. In fact, it is highly advisable to use coconut oil for oil pulling. Reason being is that it is highly absorb-able. You can experience the full health and beauty benefits of this oil through oil pulling.
