Being a black woman in the world today is like being part of a team of super heroes who are fighting to be supreme as they support and build each other. The kids are calling it “Black Girl Magic“. Being a woman today is what Sophie Cornish MBE, Co-founder of Not On The High Street told Marie Claire referred to as being a warrior for change. We are creating spaces for us to win in whatever it is we hope to achieve in life. There are African women doing great in sports, fashion, music, corporate, education, science, and arts as well as in other fields. What a time to be alive and be able to be one of these super women! But importantly, a time to celebrate them as well.
The arts are quite rich at the moment in Africa and the photography industry is telling these stories one flick at a time.
Lyra Aoko is one of the creatives in East Africa putting Africa on the map.
Kenyan born fashion and lifestyle photographer, Lyra, may have been in the industry for a short while but her work is worth a biography of its own. She has created portraits that summarize her talent in beauty and they are worth a thousand words. Moreover, she has created a studio of her own known as Aoko Creatives for both personal and commercial use. This gifted lady has partnered with incredible brands such as Google, Dior, Darling Kenya, MAC cosmetics, to bring the beauty of the world to the beautiful minds that admire her work.
Those who have had the privilege of being in front of her lens have all spoken highly of her work. It also speaks volumes all on its own. I will always be a huge fan of a photographer who has perfected the ability to make women look as beautiful as they really are without too many enhancements through the skill of editing. Lyra’s images show us that true beauty lies within us all and it lies in whoever chooses to behold it.
The idea behind her professional website gives a vibe of fewer words and letting her work speak to you. Her work has the ability to bring out happiness even where sadness is an over flow. One photographer is never a representation of them all, they each bring a different energy to the creative space.
Here is a quick look at the energy Lyra Aoko’s work brings to the creative world…
A true body of work filled with nothing but talent and passion. It is always important to love what you do and to do what you love. You can tell Lyra Aoko found her calling and she is loving every bit of it as her career. Through this black girl’s lens all I see is magic.
