Mzukisi’s Banquet | Celebrating Afro- Centrism

When we scroll through our Instagram feed, we always get excited and amazed at the creativity we see. Just like what we stand for, we see artists pushing boundaries of creativity and boldness.

One of the feeds we came across was The Algorithm.

This is a Collection of female creatives from South Africa and Great Britain who collaborate with brands and produce fresh, edgy and noteworthy content. The Algorithm consists of two partners- Tayla and Kwasi. These two have grown up with each other and have the same attention to detail and great work ethic. They decided to comprise a team that would be able to serve their clients with high quality production services in high fashion stills. One of these team members is their make-up artist, Naledi. She has been by their side since the start and hold fundamental value to the team.

So what exactly was it that caught our attention?

Just by looking at the images, we see a luxurious banquet full of color, culture, history and delicacies. We just had to know what the story was behind the project.

As Kwasi explained to us, the idea of Mzukisi’s banquet was influenced by Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. You see Kwasi first met South African designer Mzukisi Mbane at the Cape Town AFI Fashion Week. His bold ideas were bought to life through his brightly patterned garments which are well tailored in his shop in Woodstock Cape Town.

Seeing Mzu’s garments on the runway reminded Kwasi of the art direction in the movie Marie Antoinette.

From there Kwasi had the idea to make a powerful statement celebrating afro- centrism.

“I wanted to celebrate our culture in South Africa. Our culture that has for so long been shoved into the nooks and cranes of society. I wanted to celebrate Africa and our beautiful people in the most elegant and lavish way. Hence Mzu’s banquet was born”.

Tayla and Kwasi worked for a month before the concept came out. They had to get their trade exchange contacts, models and entire team involved. “This line of work is not for the faint-hearted but with a team like my girls- we have realized anything is possible!” says Kwasi.

This project comprised of many key players and would not have been possible without their team of efficient and dedicated staff.
