They said “winter is coming” and lately in Nairobi it feels like winter has arrived. We don’t experience snow in East Africa but our rainy season can count as our version of winter, don’t you think? Smart fashionistas shopped for the cold season during warmer temperatures because it can be quite expensive to shop for warm looks during the cold season. Either way here is a list of staple items you will need to get so as to conquer this harsh climate in style.
A good scarf is perfect as an accessory piece especially during the cold season. Wool, fur, cotton or silk, a good scarf will easily pair with any outfit at any given occasion. I would advise you to go with an elaborate print if the scarf is made of silk or cotton and stick with bold colors when the scarf is wool or fur.
Thigh High, Knee High Or Ankle Boots
It is quite unfortunate that in Nairobi, women tend to wear their boots during any season. Sometimes even during warmer seasons. You might be trying to achieve a stylish look but to avoid a fail always let seasons and time of day dictate your style choices.
During the cold weather we still find ourselves heading out for the evening. This is the right time to pair that sexy pair of thigh high boots with your little black dress or pants and that fur coat.
For a daytime look, opt for knee-high, ankle or mid calf boots. Pair them with dresses, skirts, jeans and leggings. It all really depends on how you prefer to dress for the cold weather.
Always go for a pair of black or brown boots. Boots are generally a statement shoe and so black or brown would be the right color when playing it safe. For my risk takers, push the boundaries and get yourself some printed boots with bold colors.
Pair them up with your all black or even all white looks. White winters are a thing ladies!
Take it back to the 50’s, you can never go wrong with a vintage comeback! Back in the day, stylish ladies wore gloves whenever they left the house and could be seen driving with a pair of sexy gloves on. Get yourself a pair of black leather gloves this season. Make sure they are tiny and edgy.
This particular accessory is less for the warmth aspect and more for the trendy aspect. This is something most ladies would never think of and therefore you could end up being fabulously unique. There is absolutely nothing wrong with standing out when everyone else is trying to fit in.
We barely see any sunshine during this cold season but a good pair of sunglasses can whether any storm! I don’t know about you but when I put on my thigh high boots and a fur coat, I need a pair of classic frames to complete my look. Go with something classic and black of course. Darker tones seem to attract warmth during cold weather. Nothing too fancy, simplicity is key when it comes to styling sunglasses for a winter look.
Each and every item on this short list is easy to access and quite easy to put together. We don’t have many cold seasons as compared to warm ones, therefore these staple items might not get much wear out of them. With that being said, it is important to make sure that they are affordable and properly stored for future use. I recommend every piece or at least two items off the list. You don’t have to look like an Eskimo during the cold weather, add a touch of style to each layer.
