“Life is way too short to spend another day at war with yourself”- Anonymous.
Loving your body and being comfortable in your own skin can be a complicated and somewhat difficult task. Every once in a while, we all experience days when we just don’t feel good about ourselves. Whether it’s because it’s that time of the month, we’re having a bad hair day or even because of something someone said to us or most important what we think about ourselves. From the time women are little girls, we are given unrealistic ideas of beauty. Is it any surprise that going to extremes in the name of beauty has become the new phenomenon?
As women, we all have something that we are insecure about when it comes to our appearance but the reality is you are good enough and these flaws / insecurities are just in your head. When we get caught in the cycle of thinking about what we see as wrong with ourselves, we fail to see what is right. The key to learning how to love the skin you are in is to remind yourself of how awesome you really are.
Here are some practical steps that you can take towards being more comfortable and confident in your own skin;
Be less critical of yourself
There may be things about your body that you may wish to change and there is nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself. However, it’s important to note that positive change cannot come from a place of negativity. Try to be less critical of how you view yourself and your body. There are plenty of wonderful things about your body, it is the vessel that carries you throughout the day.
Treat your body well and your body will treat you well
When you adopt a healthy lifestyle, your healthy choices show up externally. A good dermatologist will tell you, how your skin looks isn’t just about creams and cosmetics. Your diet also plays a major role. I am not saying you can never have a slice of pizza ever again or that you need to exercise every single day. However, it is good to provide your body with the nutrients and physical activity that it needs. Better nutrition obviously means positive changes to your appearance overtime, but it also has a positive impact on your mood and the way that your body performs.
Focus on the parts you love
If no matter how hard you try you cannot stop yourself from criticizing the size of your nose, your quirky smile or even your weight, choose a part of your body that you really love and focus your attention on that. Why not accentuate that feature instead of focusing on hiding the parts of your body you don’t love? If your lips are your favorite body part, you can accentuate them by wearing lipstick or lip-gloss. You will be surprised at how the simple act of putting on lipstick or makeup in general greatly boosts the way you feel about yourself.
Find your tribe
Who we surround ourselves with is important and a direct reflection of how we feel about ourselves. Having a supportive group of friends is another way to develop self-love and body positivity. There is nothing quite like having other women to encourage you and build you up when you are feeling down. Surrounding ourselves with people that see our beauty and encourage us to be our best selves is crucial.
It is normal to want to look your best and present yourself well. Learning to love the skin you are in is an ongoing process that involves treating your body well and retraining your brain. Therefore no matter what your body, skin, or hair looks like, it is my sincere hope that as women, we can stop waging war against our appearance and instead resolve to learning to love the skin we are. After all, feeling better about yourself is a lot cheaper than investing in cosmetics, and it is the first step towards greater women empowerment.
