Makeup is often lauded for its trans-formative beauty effects. Recently, Makeup Artists have started exploring more ways to use their faces and that of others as a canvas for creative art work. Everyone loves a good optical illusion and it looks like this trend is being adopted into beauty as well. Optical Illusions are something that is designed to manipulate reality; deceiving the eye, by appearing to be other than it is. If you need proof that Makeup is an art form all on its own, here are four Makeup Artists that have created mind-blowing optical illusions using makeup and/or makeup related products.
When people can barely master how to properly fill in their eyebrows, Mimi Choi has mastered the makeup game to a whole different level. Mimi is a former teacher turned MUA from Canada, She has been creating stunning, hyper-real optical illusions on herself using makeup products that most people already have in their makeup bags.
Manipulating makeup like she would a conventional paint palette; Mimi’s expertise comes from a skilful understanding of how to achieve a 3D-effect on any surface. Where does she get her inspo from? During an interview with Allure, Mimi explained that she mostly draws inspiration from paintings, her surroundings and photography too. “I try not to look at other Makeup Artist’s work too much and challenge myself to produce original, unique work.”
She is a South African Makeup Artist with a creative eye that is beyond comparison. Besides doing beauty makeup and optical illusions, Phumi is also able to transform herself into cartoon characters. And yes, she does this using the simple stroke of a makeup brush.
It’s safe to say that she has mastered pretty much every aspect of Makeup Artistry making her a versatile artist.
South Korean MUA Dain Yoon creates stunning optical illusions using makeup and water colors. She was even featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after going viral for her intricate makeup creations. She started off by painting other people before mastering how to paint herself. Her unique touch to optical illusion often involves blending herself into a scene.
As her bio reads on her website, Dain Yoon believes that her illusion art mirrors the way people experience the world. “People live in illusions…we see things in our own subjective way.”
Having studied fine Arts in College, Romanie became interested in illusions, which form the basis of most of her surreal creations. “Illusions create such a confusion. I have to admit I find it quite entertaining when someone is confused by the work I’ve done when in reality, it’s a very simple concept.” She says.

The process for the illusions differs depending on what she plans on drawing/painting. On average, she takes between 3-5 hours to create her optical illusions. For someone who is a self-taught makeup artist and has only been doing this for a little over a year, she has definitely captured the attention of many with her work.
From the artists above, it is evident that makeup can be interpreted in different ways. You don’t necessarily have to use makeup to look pretty; you can turn it into a creative passion. Instead of looking for a Halloween costume, why not challenge yourself to trying out a simple optical illusion makeup look?
