When you think of makeup brands, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind are cosmetic giants such as Estee Lauder, Lancôme, Fenty Beauty and Maybelline among others. However this may soon change! By the look of things, African makeup brands are effectively competing on the world stage. African-owned brands cater specifically to women with darker skin tones, something that many cosmetic companies have overlooked.
I am always on the lookout for good quality African makeup brands. This time my interest was mostly on lip-gloss and I found a brand that definitely perked my interest.
Michelle Beauty Brand
I came across the founder Michelle Gentry on Google. She is a 17 year old girl, daughter to Nigerian actress Mercy Aigbe. Let me tell you something, she is well on her journey to becoming a young successful beautypreneur. Perhaps, she’ll even be joining the league of the above mentioned beauty brands.
Michelle officially launched Michelle Beauty on the 22nd of July 2018 starting off with stunning lip-glosses. I love that the color selection has been well thought out as all the shades are flattering on dark skin tones. The packaging is well worth a mention. The ‘mini’ collection low-key resembles the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb. If the brand’s Instagram page is anything to go by, she is set to make a mark in the beauty Industry. The glosses seem to already be in high demand as their Instagram page is full of comments inquiring about prices and complimenting the products.
Ultimately I think this is a very daring and inspiring step for this 17 year old who is already making #bossmoves. This just goes to show that irrespective of your age, you can actualize your vision. Age is nothing but a number honey, just ask Yasmine Furmie.
It also speaks for the size of the market for African founded beauty brands. Vault Cosmetics, Juvia’s Place, Suzie Beauty and House of Tara are just some of the leading African Beauty brands that are owned by women who are also making their mark in the beauty Industry.
Unfortunately at the moment, the lip-glosses are only available in Nigeria. However, I’m sure as the business grows, she will consider deliveries outside Nigeria.
Congratulations to this beauty Mogul in the making! Take a look at the collection so far.
