Don’t we just love us some acai! It’s not just because of how great they look on IG foodie pages, but these little berries live up to the term superfood.
What are acai berries?
These are reddish-purple fruits that are harvested from the acai palm tree native to Central and Southern America.
Why is it good for you?
Acai berries are loaded with nutrients, and are particularly the richest in antioxidants compared to other berries. They contain anthocyanin, an antioxidant that is known to lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. They are high in fat and low in sugar, and also contain plant sterols that are beneficial in supporting balanced cholesterol levels.
Dubbed the beauty berry, cosmetic and beauty products include acai oil in their products because of its antioxidants. It is known to relieve redness, skin irritations and moisturize the skin.
How to take it?
Acai is commonly found in three forms; puree, powder and juice forms. As a puree (smoothie form) it is the best way to enjoy the full taste of the berry. Juices, if unfiltered, are loaded with antioxidants, but tend to be low in fiber and high in sugar. For a more concentrated amount of nutrients, powered form is a great source of fiber and fat.
